TRIUMF
Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Fall 2017 job posting
Job number TR17-3-3

Position Title:

Recoil Mass Spectrometer Researcher

Name of Project:

Simulating and Commissioning the Recoil Mass Spectrometer EMMA

Overview:

EMMA (ElectroMagnetic Mass Analyser) is a recently installed recoil mass spectrometer for TRIUMF's ISAC-II facility. ISAC-II can provide intense beams of heavy radioactive ions to scientists studying nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics at Canada's national subatomic physics lab. The energies of these beams depend on the specific nuclei being accelerated, but typical top speeds range from 10-20% of the speed of light in vacuum. The spectrometer separates the products of nuclear reactions from the ion beams used to induce them and disperses the heavy ions according to their mass/charge ratios.

Duties:

The student would develop and implement a web interface for an existing GEANT 4 Monte Carlo simulation of the EMMA spectrometer. This simulation is crucial for planning experiments and interpreting their results. A web-based interface would allow scientists around the world to test their ideas for experiments with EMMA without having to be experts in the spectrometer and its ion optical properties. The student would also assist in commissioning the recoil mass spectrometer with a radioactive ion beam, thereby allowing him or her to test the results of the simulation with appropriate input parameters. In addition, the student would be involved in the calibration and testing of the spectrometer's charged particle detection systems, which include position-sensitive gas detectors and energy-sensitive gas and silicon detectors.

Skills learned during this work experience:

Web development, high voltage and high vacuum techniques, industrial control, electronics, charged particle detection, data analysis

Qualifications:

Facility with computer programming
Physics and engineering courses would be an asset
Attention to detail
Analytical ability

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Fall 2017 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
