TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Fall 2017 job posting Job number TR17-3-25 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:Life Sciences Chemistry Research Assistant | ||
Name of Project:F-18 labeling of amino acids and biology studies | ||
Overview:TRIUMF routinely produces medical PET isotopes from which radiopharmaceuticals are synthesized using state-of-the-art radiochemistry facilities. Tracers produced at TRIUMF are shipped to the BC Cancer Agency or the Pacific Parkinson Research Center for imaging of patients to diagnose or invest the behaviour of diseases. One significant area of research involves the design, synthesis and study of radiolabelled amino acids as potential radiopharmaceuticals to glean metabolic information from tumor cells – information that is complementary to tradiation fluorodeoxyglucose PET (18FDG PET). Recent efforts have focused on producing amino acid analogues targeted toward their respective transporters. The lead tracers produced to date have been used to study lymphoma, glioma, ovarian and breast cancers, and have shown modest to high tumour imaging contrast in all cases studied. We aim to develop more fluorine-18 labeled amino acid tracers and compare new radiotracers with other relevant fluorine-18 imaging reagents to evaluate the potential of this tracer across a variety of cancer types. | ||
Duties:The successful candidate will join the effort of producing new amino acid based tracers for oncology imaging and therapy monitoring. She/He will take part in the organic synthesis, characterization and radiolabelling and also participate in the in vitro and in vivo evaluation. | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:Hands-on knowledge and experience with organic synthesis, radiochemistry and chemical biology will be learned. Basic knowledge in radiopharmaceutical sciences and radiotracer development will be acquired. | ||
Qualifications:The successful candidate will be a chemistry or biochemistry student with lab experience. Experience with organic synthesis/characterization, HPLC, cell culture and communication skills will be considered an asset. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:Sep - Dec 2017 with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
