Position Title:Undergraduate Research on the ATLAS ITK Upgrade
Name of Project:Tracking detector upgrade for the ATLAS experiment
Overview:After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC, a so-called Phase 2 upgrade has been proposed to enable the LHC to operate at instantaneous luminosities of 5-7E34 1/cm2/s and to provide up to 3000/fb of data by around 2035. To take advantage of the unique discovery potential of the high luminosity LHC, the current ATLAS inner tracking detector must be replaced. The conceptual design of a new all-silicon tracker (ITk) is based on 4 3D pixel and 5 strip barrel layers as well as 6 pixel and 7 strip disks on each side of the ATLAS interaction point.
Duties:The specific project will be determined upon arrival and interest of the student. It could be any (or multiple of the following)- Contribute to prototype production of ATLAS silicon strip detector modules using fully automatic wire bonder - Setup automatic assembly of detector modules using robotic gantry system - ITk module QC/QA testing using custom ITk test-system and high-precision vision CMM equipment - Analyze and characterize detector signals of new ITk modules - Test performance, data taking in high radiation environment - Analysis of test-beam data of prototype modules
Skills learned during this work experience:- Silicon detector operation and trouble shooting- High performance wire bonding - Programming of state-of-the-art robotic gantry system from Aerotech - Knowledge of experimental challenges related to particle physics - Detector readout and data acquisition systems - Data analysis in experimental particle physics
Qualifications:- Required: hardware experience- Desirable: experience with hardware description language (Verilog, VHDL) - Desirable: working experience with DAQ systems
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:4 months with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
