TRIUMF
Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Fall 2017 job posting
Job number TR17-3-23

Position Title:

CANREB Beam dynamics student

Name of Project:

Beam injection and extraction studies for the CANREB electron beam ion source

Overview:

An electron beam ion source(EBIS) is being developed in the new CANREB facility at TRIUMF to increase the charge state of injected ions by electron impact ionization process. The efficiency of the highly charged ion production depends on the EBIS performance as well as on the beam transport efficiency. A systematic study of the EBIS beam transport optics (i.e., injection/extraction) will help to improve the beam transport efficiency by understanding the ion and electron beam dynamics.

Duties:

Simulations of beam transport through the strong stray field of EBIS solenoidal field (6 T). Studies on Penning discharge in the beamline. Interact with beam physics group to present the results and obtain feed-back.

Skills learned during this work experience:

Acquire knowledge in beam dynamics. Basic principles of ion source. Simulations and programming skills (OPERA, Beam optics code, Python, matlab, etc.). Good communication and inter-personal skills.

Qualifications:

Physics, Mathematical physics, Engineering physics. 2nd year and higher.

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Sep - Dec 2017
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
