TRIUMF
Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Fall 2017 job posting
Job number TR17-3-2

Position Title:

Accelerator Physics Co-op Student

Name of Project:

Multipole High Level Application Development

Overview:

The CANadian Rare isotope facility with Electron Beam ion source (CANREB) High Resolution Separator (HRS) has been designed to reach a resolution of 20000; in order to reach this high resolution, a multipole corrector will be used to fine tune the beam between the dipole magnets. This multipole consists of 44 rods in a rectangular configuration, matching to the beam's unique shape between the magnets. With XZ symmetry, there are 23 independent poles, making manual tuning impractical. A novel scheme for tuning this multipole has been proposed consisting of determining the pole voltages by mapping the multipole potential to correct for aberrations in emittance scan data. This tuning scheme will require extensive simulations and preparations before commissioning begins. Due to the nature of the device, a high level application must be developed for implementing this tuning scheme.

Duties:

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing a web application for tuning CANREB's HRS multipole. Programming in python and javascript will be required to undertake this task. The final tool will also require beam optics simulations to be performed for bench-marking the effectiveness of this tuning scheme.

Skills learned during this work experience:

The successful applicant will gain experience with ion beam optics and web application development

Qualifications:

Program: Physics/Computer Science/Engineering
Skills: knowledge of basic computer programming
Assets: python, javascript, or prior web application development experience

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Four months with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
