Overview:

The Outreach and Communications office is a vibrant group charged with a number of key lab communication and education initiatives. We are seeking a team member to assist with various aspects of our program, but in particular, acting as the principal contact for the public tours, including showing visitors around the TRIUMF facility, and working with the office to improve the graphic and media support of the tour, as well as helping lead our visual design efforts. In addition, the student will provide important assistance with conference preparations, public lecture support, and with various strategic communication tasks.

Duties:

The student will assist with TRIUMF's Outreach and Communications program, including (but not limited to) : assisting on visual design upgrades, preparing written (brochures, posters, etc) and preferably other media (video, web) materials, maintaining information in databases, and providing assistance with conferences. In particular, the student will help with designing and implementing a major redesign of the public tour.

From January through May TRIUMF offers regularly scheduled public tours twice weekly, and every weekday daily during the summer. In addition, there are a large number of private tours for e.g. local high schools. The student will be expected to coordinate and conduct the tours, which last about 60 minutes. It is essential that the guide be able to explain clearly the research being conducted at TRIUMF in simple, non-technical language. The guide should be engaging and entertaining and must be able to adapt to the knowledge level of each tour group. A professional image will be required as you will be representing TRIUMF while guiding many visitors.

Skills learned during this work experience:

Wherever possible, the assignments will be oriented towards areas the student prefers and wants to develop. We want our students to learn new skills or enhance existing skills while at TRIUMF. In particular, you will learn about the research being conducted at TRIUMF, develop public speaking skills, become adept at "thinking on your feet", and enhance your science communication, web authoring, visual design and multimedia publishing skills using the Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac platform.

Qualifications:

Second year (minimum) science OR liberal or fine arts/business student, with a strong science background and good marks in physics and chemistry at the grade 12 and/or first year university level. You MUST describe your level of science knowledge in your application. A minimum of one related work term and/or previous experience in a science-related job.Candidates must have proven visual design skills, and previous experience with the public, for example a PR or guiding job.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to present accurate information in a clear, interesting way.

For the non-guiding component of the job, please indicate your experience in the following areas: visual design , writing, media communications, video/photography, Web authoring, Mac, PC or UNIX computer systems, and desktop publishing. Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc) would be a big asset.

Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 1810 to $ 2710 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays return air fare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
