TRIUMF

STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Summer 2010 job posting
Job number TR10-2-22

Position Title:

RadonEDM student

Name of Project:

polarisation tests within the RadonEDM experiment

Overview:

The long term goal of the RadonEDM project is to measure a non-zero, permanent electric dipole moment within atomic Rn. This is a time reversal violating moment that if detected would point to physics beyond the standard model and will be achieved by the observation of the interaction of a sample of polarised Rn atoms with external electric and magnetic fields. For this to be achieved many things have to be developed. Over the past year a technique for transferring a radioactive ion beam from the ISAC facility into a suspension of atoms within an innert buffer gas has been demonstrated. The next step is to perform systematic measurements and tests in order to demonstrate that a high degree of polarisation of the atoms can be achieved. Polarisation of the atoms of interest is achieved via spin exchange optical pumping of a sample of Rb atoms with the gas using laser techniques. These polarised Rb atoms then collide with the atoms of interest, transferring polarisation. This project will involve the development and study of the laser optical systems as well as observation of the produced polarisation using NMR techniques.

Duties:

Duties will include but not be restricted to. Data taking and analysis, optical alignment, as well as assisting other members of the group as and when required

Skills learned during this work experience:

Optical polarisation, gas handling techniques, Safe laser operation, Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (NMR).

Qualifications:

Good manual skills are an asset. Familiarity with laser optical systems would be advantageous but not required. Also at least one previous work term would be an advantage but not essential

Shiftwork required:

Yes

Period of work:

May - Aug 2010
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
